"Seven at the Table"

Post by Judith Johnson Kypta »

"Seven at the Table"

Every evening when the clock struck six
We would be sitting at the dinner table
My mom had always, a dinner to fix
My dad provided, as he was able

We siblings were five, in number
Two daughters and three sons
Always enough food, not to encumber
With fresh home-made bread and buns

As a family, we were average
Living the same, as many others
Fathers went out everyday, to work
And "home" was the place for mothers

Family was really "family" in those times
Standing by one another, through thick and thin
You didn't hear much about killings and crimes
And helping others, gave a happiness within

We ate wholesome foods and talked about the news
Or, about the happenings within our day
We shared and learned each others views
It seemed everyone, had something to say

Years passed quickly, and one by one
And another chair was empty, at our dinner table
So is the way of life, after all is said and done
Mom and daddy were aging, their health wasn't stable

My mind often wanders back to those days
I miss the closeness and real love that we shared
Always caring and helping, in many ways
The bottom line was that "we cared"

Where ever did all of those sweet years go
They can't be recaptured, or relived again
And as I enjoy, life's "Winter" season. I am glad
Tucked away are memories of our dinner table
. . . From way back then!

Written with love for "my" family

Judith, dear friend, I love your poem about your family and years gone by. It is so beautifully written and full of love, and I'm sure many of us long for those sweet, easier times in life.
God bless you and all your family,
Love, Shirley
