A Penny for Your Thoughts

An elderly homeless man was walking down the street
Suddenly, he saw a familiar face walking towards him on the sidewalk
He wore old shabby clothes and as he approached her
He waved for her to stop, saying could I have a moment of your time to talk?

He pulled a small brown paper bag out of his pocket
Then quickly handed it to her to hold unto
I know its not much, but it's all I have to give to you
I wish I could give more for all the kindness that you do!

The woman stood there smiling at the homeless man
What is in here she meekly asked, wondering to herself, what could it be?
Just take it home, it's a gift for you from me
There is a note attached for you to read, just open it, you'll see!

The woman smiled at the old man and gave him a hug
Thank you so much, this is a very kind thing that you have done
Have a good evening and keep warm tonight she said
I'll read this as soon as I get home, sorry I have to run.

The woman placed the paper bag in her purse
It was starting to snow, she wanted to get home right away
She was tired tonight from the long day at work
Even though it was all volunteer work, she loved it anyway!

When she got home, she quickly prepared something to eat
Then checked her phone for any messages
Sitting down in her favorite chair, she reached for her favorite book
Opening her Bible, slowly she started to turn the pages.

A few hours had passed and the woman had fallen asleep
She woke up and decided it was time for bed
When she was walking by her purse, she thought of the brown paper bag
So she took it out and sit down to see what the note said.

Inside the bag was five pennies, each wrapped separately in plastic
Tears filled her eyes when she read what the old man had written on the note
It was one of the most precious gifts that she had ever received in her life
A lump formed in her throat, when she read what the old man had wrote.

There are exactly five pennies placed in this bag for you
You have been a dear friend to me and I will always love you!
These pennies I have held unto for years but now we must part
So I have decided to give them to you, with all my love from my heart.

So here is one penny for all your loving acts of kindness
One penny for every tear, for strangers that you have ever cried
One penny for every smile, you have generously given away
One penny for all the love, you share that you carry deep inside....

The last penny is very precious meant for only you, please do not forget
I call it my friendship penny and I want you to have it.
Where ever you go, take it with you my dear friend
For I will never ever have a true friend like you again!

The woman sat for the longest time with tears in her eyes
What a sweet old man, what an angel he was full of love
The next day, she looked at the shelter for the old man
But soon discovered, He had departed and went Home last night
To Heaven Above!

Dear Linda,

Before the end of the first stanza I got a lump in my throat...on the way through the read tears formed. At the end of the poem, lots of thoughts...

How it is we should all remember those pennies, what they can tell us
How much we can be appreciated for when we don't even know what acts of kindness we do for others
Even when we don't think much of ourselves, thinking no one cares about us
How we find now and then the impact we have made on others
And to remember that today could be our last day to show our love
And the last day to give or receive here on earth

Your poem made a huge impact to me as a reader, and this poem is blessed.
