Mary

Late at night
She walks the lonely street
Heading to the intersection
Where there the two streets meet.

She wears her pretty new shawl
And her blue party dress
And around her neck the necklace
The one she likes the best.

She pulls her shawl around her tighter
And continues on her way
Soon headlights fall upon her
Heading the same way

The car pulled up beside her
And he asked if she'd like a ride
She turned and smiled at him
And quickly got inside.

He asked her why she was out
On a cold night such as this.
The fact she didn't wear a coat
Was one he couldn't miss!

She told him she'd been
At a very fancy dance
She went there with her date
And said his name was Lance.

But when the dance was over
She looked all around
Everyone was leaving
But Lance could not be found!

And so she started walking
It was a long walk from the town
But everyone had left the dance
Not a soul was left around.

He felt so sorry for her
And reached out to pat her hand
He offered her his handcerchief
For a tear on his hand did land!.

She felt so cold to his touch
So he turned the heater higher
And altho her dress had been damp
Now it was getting drier.

After a mile or two
They saw a Cemetery Gate
She turned to him and asked to stop
She got out and told him to wait.

He watched as she turned
And walked to the big iron gate
She looked toward him, smiled and waved
Then walked through that locked iron gate!

He couldn't believe what he saw
So out the car he flew.
He ran to the gate, but she wasn't there
It was then that he knew!

The beautiful girl
He'd given a ride to
Had left a red rose laying
There on his front seat!

Then the story came flooding back!
To him it was crystal clear!
A girl had been killed walking home from a dance
A bead of sweat on his brow, and he felt the grip of fear!

Reality now had set in
But the fear would not abate!
For he realized he's been alone
With Cemetery Mary as his date!

TO SOME WE SEEM LIKE A GENIOUS
TO SOME WE SEEM LIKE A FOOL
BUT OUR WORDS OF POETRY
IS JUST OUR EXPESSION TOOL
