SACRED BY THE FIRE

SACRED BY THE FIRE

A pile of stones and sticks, ordinary things.
The first one stumbled upon richness once,
I wonder how that went.

I think there must have been an accident.
Think it was never planned to happen.
I would love to know how it did.

I try to imagine the scene…enact it in my mind.
Man striking stone on stone to make a weapon.
A different kind of stone this time.

It was very cold, the white powder fell all over.
All on a hunt for food, wary of being taken.
The big ones were about, they would kill.

One day we shall be able to reign over them.
Until then, things are as they are.
Kill or be killed. We must all eat.

Cold. Young ones crying for warmth.
Women huddled over them, trying their best.
Dead children make for a small clan.

Man striking stones while pondering these things.
Thought process evolving, changing, growing.
Darkness closed all around the sounds of night.

Suddenly, startled to his feet, he shouts aloud !
What is this … what is this ?? Look at this !!
What have I done, will this be a bad thing ?

All come running to see, then step back in fear.
There is a blazing on the ground…like the sun.
How is the sun sitting on the ground at night ?

One ventures near to touch, and jumps back in pain.
No words yet for ‘hot’. Just knowing of hurt.
The sun on the ground spreads to the dry grass.

A pile of it there for the man to lay on.
Och !! Och !! Look…it gets bigger !!
Stay back, it will burn you all !!

One with more sense sees a thing to do.
He pushes the grass into a pile, sun in one place.
Another pokes at it with a stick…is it alive ?

Stick now has the sun on the end, oh now what ?
Throw it back to the rest of the sun.
Ahhhh….look, the sun eats it !!

A woman comes near, holding a cold, crying child.
She sits, watching in wonder and awe.
Suddenly, the child is quiet, then laughs.

Hand is reaching out for the light, eyes bright.
The woman, at the same time, feels the change.
She feels the warmth of this sun.

Others come closer to experience this odd thing.
Ohhhh…what is this, it is warm like the sun.
How can this be in the dark time ?

Another puts a stick into the sun, too.
Others do the same, wanting to try it.
The sticks catch hold of the sun and it grows !

They all gather around in wonder, eyes wide.
Yet still wary of this thing. Still fearful.
An old one says in grunts…feel the warmth !

The one who found this in his rock is magic.
Do you see what has been done ?
We have the sun at night, and its warmth !

A small child, holding a bone with raw meat,
Uses it as a stick to catch the sun.
Instead, a smell rises from this bone.

It is such a good smell. It is the first cooked meat.
I think we can take it from here in history.
And know this is why we feel sacred by the fire…

When the muse comes back, it appears to be stronger than ever. A good history lesson from the days long ago in the beginning. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to more! Our love, KayD and RogerP

You've gone and done it again Lindy, you done wrote another poem, and though a very good one as usual, I must say a bit different. Your style has changed, and that's good. Yep, they discovered more than fire back then, they were able to cook their vittles and eat. There is also another way. Stand on a hill when there is lighting. Oh, maybe I'd better do that one. My keyboard is acting weird. Oh yes, they do need batteries replaced sometimes. Wonder if I can strike up a fire with batteries. Love the poet and love the poet. God bless.
Live today as if it were your last, for tomorrow it will be your past, but live it with peace in mind, joy to find, and for God divine!

LINDA, WHAT A DIFFERENT WRITE AND UNUSAL. GREAT STORY OF HISTORY. SURE HOLDS THE ATTENTION OF THE READER AND MANY DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT HOW FIRE WAS DISCOVERED. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE SURPRISE THE CLAN ALL HAD WHEN FIRE WAS BURNING WITH A GLOW, LIGHT AND HEAT. AND TO SEE YOU COULD COOK RAW MEAT HAD TO BE WONDER BEYOUD WORDS. I'M SURE THIS HELP TO POPULATE MANY CLANS AND PRODUCE MORE DISCOVERY FOR MANKIND. DANG GIRL, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THIS THOUGHT AND WRITE. HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND GOD BLESS YOU. LOVE BRENDA
