JESUS’ LAST PASSOVER

‘Twas on the first day of unleavened bread,
that His disciples asked Jesus just where
that they so should go for them to prepare
a place where they could share the Passover.

He sent forth of His disciples—only just two,
saying, “Go to the city; there he’ll meet you—
a man bearing a pitcher of water—follow him.
Say to the goodman of the house as you go in:

‘Our Master asks, where is the guest chamber
that with my disciples I shall eat the Passover.’
A large furnished upper room he will show you
prepare and make ready for us you will so do.”

To that room Jesus and the 12 made their way
In the evening as the night was coming to stay.
As they did eat, Jesus took bread and it broke
“Take, eat: this is my body.” Words He spoke.

He took the cup and when he had given thanks,
He gave it to them and they then all of it drank.
“This is my blood of the new testament,” He said.
“It is my blood which for mankind will be shed.”

I will thus drink no longer of the fruit of the vine
Until I drink it new in the kingdom which is Mine.”
At the table on the pillows each sat at their place.
Conversing, when the twelve did hear Jesus say,

“Verily I say unto to you, one of you who eats
with Me shall betray Me.” Sorrowful they be,
saying, “Is it I? Is it I? Is it I?” said one more.
Quiet they became as Jesus then did answer,

“It is he who has into the dish dipped with Me.
For to whom I’ve given the sop, him it will be.”
Judas, the betrayer, answered, “Rabbi, is it I?”
“So you have said,” Jesus to Judas gave reply.

Even before the evening’s feast of the Passover
Jesus knew that it was the coming of His hour.
After singing a hymn, to the garden they went.
In Gethsemane, Jesus final hours in prayer spent.
