Family Garden

F A M I L Y
G A R D E N

(poem to Rhonda)

My sister
opens a window
and reaches into the stars-
She pulls down a cloud

it cries in her hand..

As she smiles,
the raindrops
turn into a rose..

She plants the rose in her family garden..

It will be watched over by the Oak
She touches the Oak for the last time
She feels it move..

Although the Oak can withstand natures fury,
It will always bend to her touch..

My sister
has planted a row of flowers -
They circle her heart

Two of them have roots that reach
deep into her core

they are hers..

She has felt them grow,
nourished the soil they call home.

As they whisper stardust between themselves
Their laughter becomes the breeze she inhales
She feels their dreams inspire her dreams
Their pain, like thunder, wakes her up..

She sees tears fall through the leaves
And saturate the Oak
..

My sister
flies with the butterflies -
Past the churches of her youth
Over the promises of yesterday
She lands in the field of her memories..
She wants to find the memory that glows..
So she lands on a branch,

Nearby,
A rainbow is absorbing colors
but the leaves of the Oak
hide her..

She flutters over her past
her wings stirring emotions
She sings about her loves
as the breeze blows her into yesterday..

She waits for a sparkle
and laughs when it does
..

She wants to stay in this world
but the sky is too vast..
She feels the oak sway
as she lifts her wings
and climbs toward the sun..

My sister
climbs mountains
just to reach the moon..

She begs it..
"please watch over my family garden"

Below her,
The Oak looks up in sadness,
it's limbs streatched out
it tries to reach what it can not..
Around it's base,
her flowers are blooming..
They bathe in the moons glow.

My sister smiles again
as she hands down another rose..
she fades into dawn,
the air is damp..
