Christmas, Treed

Christmas, Treed
by Sandra S. Corona

Standing in dense woods, enjoying conversation,
till men (quite jolly) chopped without hesitation.
I shiver, quiver, in the dark, shipped overseas.
Where are they sending the best of the bushy trees?
Close the door, hurry, dress me! I'm an evergreen tree
quite chastised by ornamental dignity.
Better checks my branches for snakes, I'm slithery.
This tradition is a mystery, misery.
My trunk, wounded, needs daily water pure, pristine,
I'm very thirsty. Water gives my needles sheen.
In most houses (at night) I'm the Princess of Light--
folks sing out, 'Carol', give me packages wrapped, bright.
Enshrined with little bulbs that shimmer, shine, I'm hot
as humans circle around, smile, touch me … a LOT.
I'm showing my roots! Oops! Will you give me a skirt?
My needles, coarse, droop, swoon, miss fresh air, I miss dirt.
You've heard of car bras? Naked trees need them, bring 'em.
I need balls closer to my trunk, not on ends, limbs.
If I catch cold, sneeze, don't shake my needles out … please.
Do you have a doctor here who cares for young trees?"
Standing in the window across the street I see
a lovely sister who is decked out … just like me.
Looking closer see, she's an artificial tree!
Her home's a cardboard box, she lives infinity.
One could leave her braless, there is nothing to see!
She is emerald, plastic, a great big phony.
After Christmas I am mulch, ashes spread around.
Why not spare me? All live trees should thrive around town.
I would stand proud, though naked, my roots deeply thrust,
filter the air of carbon dioxide. Trust us."

Till then …
Close the door, hurry, dress me! I'm an evergreen tree
quite chastised by ornamental dignity.

I am not perfect. I am a work in progress. I have the greatest carpenter who ever
lived repairing me. Do you know Him?
His name is Jesus Christ.
