"ABANDONED HOUSE"

Post by Don » Tue Mar 01, 2011 6:42 pm

Abandoned House ©

Who built it, who owned it, who grew up inside?
Who painted and fixed it, and lived there with pride?

The place now deserted just left to fall down.
Except for the wind chime there’s nary a sound.

A great many stories this old house might tell,
With its squeaking wood stairs and musty old smell.

If the walls could converse somehow with the ceiling,
And we might interrupt with words what they’re feeling,

Whose secrets are buried and gossip lay hidden.
With thoughts left unsaid and others forbidden.

What joy and deep sorrow has transpired within?
Where a life was completed before it begin.

Where children grew up leaving only their dreams,
To this house they abandoned with its wide-open beams.

Now tattered and aged with its rooms left undressed,
As they stripped all the carpet that it once possessed.

The bricks have collapsed from a chimney so high,
They’ve toppled to rubble barely reaching the thigh.

This house will be gone in its place you may find,
A big shopping mall with its stores all combined.

Remember with time if your memory should fail,
The "home" that once stood here, was never for sale.

I remember the house we lived in growing up, and all of the
memories that were shared; some good, and some bad.
Those will never be forgotten, even as the house is being
confiscated by ' Eminent Domain'.

Don, a really great poem!!! I Love all your work!

I am always intrigued with poems and pictures of old houses. As I read your poem, I remembered my trips to the Eastern Shore section of Virginia when I was a representatiave for a national food chain, Armour Foods. I live on the east coast in southern Virginia and my route took me across the Chesapeake Bay to the Eastern Shore every three weeks to check on markets from Virginia up into Delaware. I loved it over there, all way up the pennisula, there were miles of wide open country side and small towns, it seemed most of them were fishing villages. I always took note of old vacant houses standing back from the road, sometimes the structure was intact, but many of them were gutted frames , maybe with the chimney still standing, and I most always had thoughts relating to what you have written here. God only knows the living, loving and dying that took place in each one. Maybe, somday, I'll visit the penisula again, though It's has become more populated and industrialized in the last ten or fifteen years. Thank you for sharing your poem. I'm sorry I don't get to post to all of your poems, but I do enjoy them very much. Thank you for triggering these nostalgic memories of former years.
God less you! Shirley
